In this video I used 3 colors to for the skin. This girl I found on google images (which I can find no reference to where she came from) I am using her as a portrait subject. I outlined her face using titanium white. Then for her base I used titanium white, burnt umber and yellow orche or a mixture of these three. To add shadow I usually use color of some sort. The colors I choose were cadmium red, teal, hansa yellow, I paint intuitively as I have no plan. Hence my paintings may have turquoise lips or orange hair. I randomly pick up colors and have no rules to how to do things. I Outline the face with colors such as quinacridone magenta using my fingers to smudge the lines.
I made this background in ten minutes. The tools I used were a palate knife, sponges, my hands, a water spray bottle, and paper towels. I use golden acrylic paints which are a little expensive, whatever fits your budget. You can mix a gel medium such as (Golden Open Acrylic Matte) with the paint to make it last longer and to thin it out.
The colors I used were Teal, Ultramarine Blue, Titanium White. Hansa Yellow medium, phtlhalo blue (green shade) pyrrole red, quinicridone magenta and pyrrole orange.
Any acrylic paint will work, whatever works with your
Budget. I use acrylic paint because it dries fast. actually since I have only been painting for 2 years I have not tried oils or watercolors. any medium will do...this is your project.
a background. the more wild and free, the more emotion and energy.
Create a space to paint. It could be a corner of a room, a closet, the garage, even outdoors.
But take a few moments and make it your own.
Use your own things.
To protect the floor, you can use trash bags, flattened cardboard boxes, old tablecloths, old shower curtains, old rain coats…be creative. Try to add some items special to you.
I have a hawk’s feather, quartz crystals, battery operated candles of various sizes and some of my favorite polished rocks. Take a scratch piece of paper and write down a mantra for this space. For example here are some of my words.
“here I exist, here I breath, here I will be pure, here I will be free, of negativity. I will move into this space to embrace me. I am just, I am as good as anyone else. As I paint my self-portrait, help me connect with the best parts of me…I know I have pain..but that grants me empathy, I know I faults but that guides me towards direction to improve what is imperfect . As I paint, in this space help me find myself, the best parts of me.”
Painting a background…look at this color wheel and pick 4 colors side by side…for instance. I will pick blue, green, white, and turquoise, purple. And to make things pop I used an opposite color (yellow and some orange.
If you pick colors too far apart on the color wheel without drying, when these colors mix, you will get Mud (brown, black) . Analogous colors (side by side) are best. Of course you can also mix White and Black to add depth. As you watch my painting video I did not follow my rules. I did add some yellow and orange and took the chance of “mud”. So remember most importantly to play. Turn music on, dance, throw paint, pretend you are a child….there are no mistakes.
